Why your fireplace smells in summer

Summer smells from your fireplace are more common than you might think. Here’s why they occur.

The Role of Humidity

High humidity levels during summer months can cause a musty smell from your fireplace. This is due to moisture interacting with creosote deposits, a byproduct of burning wood that sticks to the inside of your chimney.

When the air is damp, creosote absorbs the moisture, releasing unpleasant odors into your home. Proper ventilation and regular chimney cleaning can help mitigate these smells.

Air Pressure Changes

During summer, the air inside your home is often cooler than outside, leading to a reverse draft. This reverse draft pulls air down the chimney, bringing with it any lingering odors from creosote or ash.

To reduce this effect, you can close the damper when the fireplace is not in use, preventing outside air from coming down the chimney. Another solution is installing a top-sealing damper, which can improve air control.

Resolving Odor Issues

Regular chimney sweeping can prevent buildup that contributes to odors. Using seasoned wood for burning also limits creosote production, reducing smelly deposits.

If you have persistent odor issues, consult with a chimney professional who can identify any underlying problems, such as leaks or other structural issues that might contribute to unwanted smells.
